
Learning Centre
The YMCA work with local colleges to provide an IT Learning Centre making education available over the Internet.
The Centre offers a range of ICT courses including Word-processing, Databases, Spreadsheets, Presenting Information. All Computer courses are available in Introduction, Advanced and Expert levels. Although most courses are online, supplementary materials are also available offline such as CD-ROM based course materials, as well as books and reference supplements. The Centre also offers structured, tutor-led classes in Microsoft Office programmes.
Also on offer are Skills for Life Courses targeted at young unemployed people to lead them from dependency into independence. These include English and Number Skills Check, Away with Words, Letter Writing.
The target market is primarily residents of the YMCA hostel and people within the local community. Courses are available to anybody between the ages 18-65 years whose main aim is computer literacy, while those within the job market are encouraged to strive to achieve the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). Individuals are encouraged to decide on a course that suits their needs after an initial assessment.
This is an accredited ECDL Test Centre and have recently begun City & Guilds on-line testing for numeracy and literacy. ECDL qualification is recognized throughout Europe and equips participants with a good knowledge of the different Microsoft Office software.
Free IT courses are available for qualifying applicants.
