Young Parent Support
Support and advice for young parents and parents-to-be
The Families Matter Nurseries exists to offer support and advice to young people aged 14-24 years around pregnancy, parenting, contraception and sexual health issues. The project works closely with secondary schools in Haringey and Endfield, YMCA Hostel, Hospitals, TPCT. Health Visitors, Social Services and Sure Start.
Haringey has high rates of conceptions amongst 15 – 18 year olds, rising from 62.3 per 1,000 in 1998 to 71.0 per 1,000 in 2003 (the national rate was 42.3). In Haringey 15 of the 19 wards are in the highest 20% in England for under 18 conception rates, with a marked increase towards the east of the borough. And UK has the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in Europe .
Often young parents may be struggling to finish their education, find work or just cope with parenthood. Young parents sometimes become estranged from family and friends and this can lead to depression and feelings of isolation..
The project came about in 1998 when girls were being excluded from local schools and had nowhere to go for support, and little educational opportunities ahead of them. The Families Matter project began to offer NVQs in Childcare and Development, so that at least the parents would have some practical skills for their future careers. The project has much moved on since then, with much more integrated work with schools, and supporting young parents to continue their education, and providing support groups.
