
Activities
The Harringay Club is the venue for Hornsey YMCA's extensive range of activities for children and young people. Since January 1997 the club has concentrated on providing a high quality yet affordable programme of recreational activities for all ages from babies to young adults.
PRESCHOOL PROGRAMME (0 - 4 years)
The YMCA preschool programme aims to provide a worthwhile facility for both the child and the carer. It promotes the development of movement skills, confidence and social interaction and encourages carers' participation with the younger children. The classes are designed to gradually progress through the ages until the children are ready to work independently.
Baby Massage: suitable for new-borns to crawling stage baby massage is a natural and soothing way for a parent to communicate with his or her baby. Simple massage techniques taught will encourage body awareness and resilience whilst deepening the trust and love between parent and baby. Massage also helps to ease stress and trauma; it is a nourishing and fulfilling form of play (participants will need to bring massage oil and towel).
Bubble Club: A morning designed for parents/carers and baby to meet new friends, explore different toys including soft play, exercise their vocal cords and crawl freely in a safe environment and find their own feet. Strictly under 3's.
Busy Bees: A class for up to 4 years with a strong emphasis on gymnastics and art. The sports hall will be set up with both gymnastics equipment and soft play and the lower studio will be open for the children to experiment with art. It will also incorporate soft play and music and song.
Toddler Cooking: A chance for your child to demonstrate that he/she may be a budding chef!
Happy Mondays: A class for 0-4yrs incorporates gym, soft play, arts, crafts, music & song.
Carer and Toddler Gymnastics: A class aimed at the younger child, which provides confidence-building activities and develops balance, co-ordination and social interaction. A large range of equipment is used including soft play pieces, balance beams, climbing frames and hand held apparatus. Carers are expected to get involved with a structured warm up and provide support for their children as they negotiate thier way around the equipment.
Pre-school Gymnastics: Children are now expected to attend without their carers. Children follow a warm up and then join a small group to concentrate on developing basic gymnastic skills.
Carer/Toddler Ballet: Creative plays using basic ballet technique, song and dressing up. Parents are expected to join in!
Pre-school Ballet: A Class designed to encourage the early development of movement, co-ordination and flexibility. Children are expected to attend alone although carers can watch from the wings! - during initial sessions.
Mini Mozart: A sing along mini musical, each class features a piano accompanist, violin, clarinet, percussion, bubbles, parachute, and interactive story based on a different fairy tale each week. Post Natal: For babes in arms (no crawlers please) the post-natal class will be mat based and incorporate some massage and lovely calming repertoire as well as well as our usual songs and games with the parachute, bubbles, violin, clarinet & piano. Sing and Sign: Sign and Sign’s unique approach combines action songs, props, pictures and toys in musical activities designed to stimulate speech and language development.
Monkey Music: Music based class. Singing, dancing and playing percussion. This is lead by a teacher who acts as a conductor. Children learn to accompany a song whilst playing a short rhythm and singing at the same time. ideal for budding musicians!
JUNIOR PROGRAMME (reception, infants and junior ages 5 - 11 years)
The junior programme aims to provide stimulating out-of-school activity for 5 to 11 year-olds in a safe, friendly and secure environment.
Gymnastics: Gymnastics classes follow the traditional British Gymnastics syllabus and concentrate on the major disciplines of floor work, vault, beam and bar work, building skills such as balance, strength and flexibility. Children can work towards merit awards. Classes are available on a drop-in basis or as a course.
Ballet: Ballet is an ideal discipline for developing poise and posture, co-ordination and rhythm. Classes are available on a drop-in basis working on basic ballet technique and freedom of movement. Alternatively courses are available accompanied by our pianist Krystina, concentrating on classical balled and working towards the Royal Academy of Dancing grade examinations.
Modern Dance: A mixture of Jazz, Street and Contemporary Dance. These classes will provide a fun and energetic workout for all who take part. Pupils will also work towards taking exams.
Tap: Tap is a fun way to develop co-ordination, rhythm and fast footwork and provides a vigorous workout for children with lots of energy.
Saturday Club: A mixed activity session that offers Gymnastics and Street Dance.
Football: Sessions on Thursday at the Harringay Club and on Saturdays and Greig City Academy (Summer) or Hornsey School for Girls (Winter) term time only.
Sessions are run by qualified football coaches aiming to develop football skills and proved game playing opportunities.
Multi Skills: A mixture of agility, balance, co ordination and fun. Sports skills such as running, jumping throwing, catching and striking which help prepare young children for the transition into club and community sport.
Saturday activities: open term time only. Closed the Saturdays straddling school holidays.
Course information. All fees to be paid termly in advance and priority booking are normally for 2 weeks after half term.
Playschemes: Holiday playschemes for 5 - 11 years and sportcamps for 5 - 13 years are held during all school holidays. Application forms are available to reception approximately four weeks prior to each school holiday. Discount is given to YMCA members.
YOUTH PROGRAMME (12 - 15 years)
Kung Fu, Karate, Tap/Jazz, Ballet, Tai Chi, Gymnastics, Pilates
Birthday Parties: Hall and Café Hire, Bouncy Castle Hire, Face Painting, Sports, Dance, Traditional party games.
